Here’s my analogy. A studio shoot is like going out on New Years Eve, you want it to be fun, you are expected to have and you end up in the same place possibly not having fun. A few years ago I was out and noticed 2 ladies stood at the bar, champagne, sparkly outfits, and they were on their phones, no chat just leaning on the bar on their phones. Then every now and again they would grab a guy and take a selfie, they looked like they were having an AMAZING time! All their FB friends would be envious of the night they were having.
Now a location shoot is one of those nights you go for 1 drink and end up rolling in at 3am! You’ve had the best night, it was so much fun! You went to the pub but there was so much going, live music, good friends, good beer, and it just all came together. It’s the night you talk about for ages, so easy and relaxed and no pressure to have fun!
So why choose a location shoot? Well there are SO many reasons. Firstly, you will feel much more relaxed, the fresh air the green spaces just naturally make us feel better, you’ll be moving about, and it is much more relaxed. If you choose the location, it will be a place you love so again you will instantly feel at ease. Which always makes for great photos!
Secondly, we don’t need to go far to get different backdrops. So, nature, to me, is the best backdrop, so many different colours, textures, contours…. Trees, gates, buildings, landscapes, greens, browns, vibrant flowers. I recently did a shoot at Chesterton, a great location, easy access but so many locations within a few meters of each other. A fallen down fence, a red brick building, a Cotswold stone wall, woodland, snowdrops, a lake, reeds, wild grasses, sunflowers an avenue of trees, all within a few metres of each other! Ideal for all and perfect for the little legs as they didn’t have far too walk and we still were able to go in search of the Gruffalo!
Thirdly, as we go from location to location, you get to play, run around with the kids, throw leaves in the air, play soldiers, walk hand in hand, stop for a cuddle, have race, really have some fun, make some memories and have a great day out. So many of the best images are those that you didn’t realise were taken, and this is where the location shoot also comes into play. As you play, I snap and you then LOVE the end result!
Location! Location! Location! Winner winner everytime!
